Christmas traditions

Posted by: Lynsey Hunter on: December 4, 2008

I have been thinking about what kind of festive traditions James and I can start as a family when Sam begins to get older and become more aware of what’s going on.  Does anyone have any good ideas of things we could do?  Current suggestions include buying new pyjamas for Christmas Eve, watching a Christmas film at a certain point in the days leading up to Christmas and buying a new decoration each year.  Answers on a postcard please! (Alternatively, you can just leave a comment on here!!!) Sensible, sweet or silly are all acceptable!

Evening… Great to see more pictures on your Flickr and new posts on your blog.

Our family thing for Christmas has always been to go to the beach on Christmas Eve. We’ve been a bit slack over the last few years but Isaac will be joining us for his first ever Christmas Eve Beach Visit this year. We’re very excited.

I really like the film idea…

Going to the beach is a lovely family tradition! I’m sure that Isaac will love it. I wish Sheffield was nearer the coast.

Perhaps we need to compile a list of festive family favourites so that we always have them to hand. I’m thinking that Miracle on 34th Street has to have a place in the top ten. Any other festive favourites?

Something I want to do with Elena each year is cook/bake something that is a Christmas tradition from another country/culture. I’ll have to do a bit of research on this one but I like to think I’d be helping her geography and to be culturally aware.

I also have this image of my little girl saying ‘but Mummy I just want mince pies …’ : )

That’s a cool idea, and you’re such a hip mummy!!! It’s so important to let the little ones share in experiences from other cultures. We do lots of Christmas activities from around the world at school, and there are some lovely ones. I sometimes think that we don’t have enough traditions of our own in England. Will the mince pies be mummy’s or Mr Kipling’s?

Before Elena I had time for home baking; now it’ll need to be Mr Kiplings. What did I used to do with all my spare time?!!

Sian seems to have found LOADS more time for baking since Isaac arrived. Still no home made mince pies though. I’ll have to make do with brownies and cheesecake.
